It is late afternoon on the Ekeberg hill above Kristiania, the city we now call Oslo. A road runs along the ridge with a wooden fence on the fjord side, and below it the water lies flat and dark, holding the last desperate glimpse of light the way a hand holds a coin it has decided not to spend. Three men are walking; the third, a painter not yet thirty, has begun to fall behind. The sun is going down, as it does every evening, but on this very evening the sunset has a different colour, the colour of the inside that dwells inside someone’s soul. His friends walk on. He stops at the fence and leans on it, tired to death; the sky seems to have turned blood red, as if tongues of fire were above the fjord, and a scream was going through nature, and he could not say from where.

He does not run away. He is a man too tired to run, and still a man who stands his post.

He comes back. In 1892, he paints Despair: a figure at that fence with the sky already burning. In 1893, The Scream: the same road, the same fence, the same sky, only now the figure turns and shows us its face. In 1894, a crowd along the same rail, every face green, every mouth shut, and he calls it Angst.

He stood three years on the same one road. The most famous scream in art was never an event. It was a place a man kept returning to, at the same hour, to stand in front of something that would not show itself. He did not know what was coming in over the water. He knew where it lived, and he went there, evening after evening, and waited at the rail like a sentry posted to a border no map had drawn.

Black Angels

He had to stand by that very post to face a past that was, since the beginning, lurking inside of him.

Illness and madness and death were the black angels that stood at my cradle.

His mother died of consumption when he was five. His sister Sophie died of it a month before his fourteenth birthday, in a wicker chair, because she had asked to be lifted out of the bed. They took his sister Laura to the asylum. His father, a military physician, prayed over the children as if the house were under siege.

Munch was born on a spiritual battlefield, and did the only thing a man can do with a field he cannot leave: he stayed, and learned its every stone, preparing for the incoming battle against an unknown enemy.

The Sick Child, Death in the Sickroom, Madonna, Vampire are all reports from the same post, each one saying that the enemy is still out there, and still faceless.

Without anxiety and illness, I am a ship without a rudder.

It admits the trap: the dread pointed nowhere. He steered by it, and drank, and lost the top of a finger to a pistol in a quarrel with a woman he could neither marry nor leave, and still went back to the rail.

You can hold a field for a long time and be broken by the thing you were waiting to see. In the autumn of 1908, after a long collapse into drink and something worse, he asked to be committed to a nerve clinic in Copenhagen and did not come out until spring. Baths, diet, quiet rooms, a mild electric current. This is the stage no one warns you about: sometimes the army shows itself by charging, and the sentry learns its shape from the wound.

The shape might not be what the sky had promised. He had arrived hearing voices, certain he was hunted, that enemies in Norway were organised against him. The doctors found only a bottle and a man. The enemy he had been watching the fjord for all those years had been standing at the rail the whole time, in his own coat, looking out.

Eight Metres of Dawn

In the spring of 1909 he came home to Norway for good, rented a house on the rocks at Kragerø, and began to paint what he had never painted before: road workers in the snow, a yellow log driving into the picture like a spear, and the sun, over the water, in the early morning, coming up. He had spent twenty years painting that light go.

Now he painted its arrival.

The university announced a competition for its new assembly hall, and it took five years and two undecided juries before they let him do it. In 1916 the canvases went up: almost eight metres of dawn on the central wall.

The Scream he had made in tempera, on cardboard, a fragile thing for a fragile hour. He laid this Sunrise on in oil, thick, on canvas the size of a wall, painted outdoors in a shed he built on the rocks. A low horizon, the fjord, two dark cliffs, and between them the sun, just risen, throwing out rays that run off the canvas and across the panels on either side.

In 1893 the sky over that water was horizontal bands, slats across a lid. Here it is spokes from a centre as a wheel opening into something new. On the side panels, men and women reach naked towards the light. On the central wall there is no one at all. The missing figure is the one who used to stand at that fence with his back to the sky. There is nothing to turn away from now, so he has turned round, and he is you.

He did not paint what the light revealed. No army on the water, no enemy given a face. He painted the revealing. And that is not the victory, whatever they say about the serenity of the late Munch: the sunrise ends the war that cannot be won, the war against fog, and begins the one that can be lost.

A sentry who has seen the army is no longer a sentry. He is a soldier, and the difference is that now he can win as well as be won.

He was not cured. The drinking eased; the black angels did not.

An Army with a Shape

Fear has an object, as Heidegger said: you fear something, and something can be fought. Anxiety has none, which is why it cannot be fought. That is what a sunrise changes. Not that the dread goes, but that it acquires edges: a fear with a size and a direction, standing where the fog was. The ground is the ground at the rail still. But now there is somewhere to walk towards, somewhere to march against.

Everyone has a rail. A place, a person, an hour of the day, where you keep going back without being able to say what waits there. The temptation is to demand the name first, to refuse the post until the enemy has been counted.

There is nothing to do there but what he did: come back, in every light and in none, while the enemy is still only weather, is only the tempestuous reverberation in the air, or the imperceptible shaking of the ground beneath an approaching army.

Because the awareness does come, on its own schedule, and it is not always kind. What it shows is usually smaller than the dread it replaces, and closer to home one might think.

From that morning, the war is no longer against fog. It is against a thing with a size and a name, and things with names can be fought. It came for him, as it comes for all of us.

He painted the light by which a dark thing is seen, and left the cliffs on either side as dark as he found them. He stood at that fence for twenty years so that one morning there would be something to fear, at last, instead of everything. He stood by the fence so now there is something to fight against, and something to fight for.

Go to the field before you know the army. And then, in 1925, and again in 1927, a man past sixty went back and painted The Sick Child once more: the same wicker chair, the same red hair on the pillow, the oldest post he had, with his sun eleven years up on the wall behind him. By then, the enemy had a name. It was still in the chair. He went back and painted it with the light on.

We cannot know who won, but the battle has been fought.

The frame is fiction; everything standing inside it is real. The dates, the paintings, the mirror, the orange in the prison cell: all of it checked against the record.

21-01-1910

Just returned to my studio after visiting my mother; she seemed ill, possibly from worry; money again, I think. She will not say. My studio looks at the back wall of Schönbrunn. A palace outside the window, and my room is small.

Klimt came by this morning; he wants to trade drawings again, several of mine for one of his, and when I asked him why, he said only that I draw better than he does. I don’t really know what he sees in them; my style is so dramatically different, so much less perfect, harmonious, ‘sacred’. But the fact he likes it is promising. Only I don’t. I’m obsessed with painting myself like I am; I try to paint myself the way I view myself, and yet I fail, over and over.

After I came home, I saw my mother’s tall mirror standing in front of me. It was hers once; it is the one thing of hers I keep. A man looked me in the eyes; I tried to evade him, but I couldn’t. I put the mirror on my studio floor, sat with my back against the wall and looked at myself. The body in the mirror looks scrawny; every piece of it is so terrifyingly angular; the hair looks dirty, and its skin looks disgusting. I stripped down until I was naked; the clothes hindered me from looking more closely at my body. The mirror showed me a chest that never developed, ribs I could count from across the room.

Maybe if I twisted the body, it would look more like myself. I stood up and bent my back toward the mirror, keeping my head where it was. The pose gave me nothing. The bones were more visible this way; that felt more like me. I still don’t feel at home; I feel like I’m crammed into the bones of a stranger. Whenever I try to make this scrawny machinery mine, it rejects me, and the moment I try to transcend it, it doesn’t let me go.

I got up, ran towards the mirror and looked deep into the eyes of the man before me. I couldn’t recognise him; the only appealing part was who I saw behind those eyes. I shouldn’t feel this way. The rage came up in me all at once. I grabbed the wide mirror and threw it down. It went into dozens of pieces. Shocked at what I had just done, I looked down at the glass on the floor. I saw fragments of my body in the glass splinters; my entire body looked distorted, and the proportions had changed. Not only was the mirror fragmented; my body seemed to be broken down as well. A strange sense of recognition went through me; I liked the distorted picture better.

The two who stay two

That total merge, a fusion of two beings, until my soul is indistinguishable from yours. Why couldn’t we get that close, Wally? Every time I imagine it, I long to be not so alone anymore, to be together. But we aren’t together, no matter how hard you cling to me, how many portraits I paint of you, how many poems I dedicate to you; we still are our two separate people.

I wish I could forget myself, to drown in you and you to drown in me; you don’t understand me until you have been me, and you haven’t; you can’t. You’re just as crooked, unreasonable and malformed as I am; if someone would offer that perfect transcendence of two spirits, it would be you and yet I am still holding on to another person.

At some moments I don’t even know your thoughts; I have to guess what you think. Sometimes even I have to guess how you feel. Well, that’s a lie; I have to guess very often, and I’m more often wrong than right, but luckily enough you still put up with me, and where would I be without you. Three springs ago you brought oranges to my cell; I drew one on the blanket and wrote that the one orange was the only light. It is still the truest caption I ever wrote.

Sometimes I even think you're ugly; it’s just that you’re ugly exactly in the way that I am. I feel more in love with you whenever I see that ugly side; it reminds me that you are, at the end of the day, secretly the same as me.

Maybe it’s impossible; we live in a physical world, we’re physical creatures, maybe we will never be together as in my imagination. But Wally, if I didn’t want this, I couldn’t keep living; I need to at least be able to long for it. Even if science proved it impossible, I would keep trying and keep begging.

I would hold onto you even if it kills me, even if it would only exist inside my mind; I wouldn’t let it die, I wouldn’t let go. Sometimes, in my dreams, I’m so close, so close to believing we are together, that we both come from the same stars and have reunited as one. The big canvas in the studio is of us, a man and a maiden, entwined; I cannot finish the faces.

I am delusional, and I am fully aware of that. I’m not reasonable; maybe I’m evil; maybe I’m actually abusing you by keeping you in this dream, this nightmare. This dream won’t go anywhere; it’s unproductive, it’s silly. I’m not engaged with anything in the world, except this far-away dream, this precious dream. I understand you don’t want anything to do with me anymore; I’m probably a dead man to you, Wally. Maybe that’s for the better. Would a dead man mean anything to you?

The Borrowed Family

30-10-1918

Edith is dead. I write it down because I don’t believe it yet; maybe if it stands on a piece of paper in my own scribbled handwriting, it will become true. She died the day before yesterday, in the morning, in her parents’ flat, across the street from my old studio. She was six months pregnant.

I drew her while she was dying, black chalk on brown paper. I don’t know why my hand did that; it just kept drawing, as it belonged to someone else, as it has always belonged to someone else. I think that was the last drawing. I feel it very clearly, and I am not even sad. That frightens me. I am angry that I am not sad.

I keep asking why. Why not me? I used to claim I prayed for my own death. But Edith now, and Klimt in February instead. Also then, I went down to the morgue and drew his dead face three times; they had shaved him off; they had shaved my friend away. They took the face I knew, and left me a stranger to draw. In March the Secession gave me the big hall, nineteen paintings; the paintings brought almost sixteen thousand kronen, and people who never used to greet me now wave, and demand my smile in return. I thought it arrived, the life, the real one, the ordinary one everyone else seems to simply have.

In the studio stands the painting of the family. A man, a woman, a child. The man is me. The woman is not Edith; Edith never wanted to sit naked, so I hired a model. I painted the child later, over a bouquet of flowers; my little nephew sat for it. I look at the picture now, and I finally conceive what I made. A borrowed family, put together out of strangers and flowers, out of the scraps of life I still had around me. Because that is what I do, that is all I have ever done, I paint the wanting.

Wally, you never answered my question. You couldn’t; you were in Dalmatia nursing soldiers, and you died there in December. I heard it much later, from others, the way one hears about a stranger. So now it doesn’t matter anymore which of us was the dead one.

The fever is in me too; I feel it coming up slowly like someone climbing the stairs. And here is the strange thing I want to write about while I can still hold this pen. I am not afraid the way I always thought I would be. My whole life I wanted three things. To be at home in this body, and the body refused me; I stood in front of the mirror, and it refused me every single time. To be one being with another person, and we stayed two; whatever we did, we stayed two. And to have an ordinary life, wife, child, table, and this I only managed to paint. Three wants, not one of them ever arrived, and still I wouldn’t give back a single day of the wanting, because the wanting, the mere wanting, was the only thing that was ever completely mine.

The child would have come in the spring. I would have shown it how to hold a pencil.

There, you see, I am doing it again. I am painting what isn’t there.

Morning, Vienna, in the last years of the empire. At the end of a garden where the grass grows as it pleases, a low studio hides behind fruit trees, and a heavy man in a long blue smock crosses the lawn with cats at his heels. Inside, the day’s quiet routine has already begun. Models drift through the rooms, clothed or unclothed, dozing on sofas, the whole studio like an orchestra still awaiting the director’s cues. No one performs. Even the light sits down in the studio quietly.

The man moves among them without a word, and the only sound in the room is graphite: a pencil line tracing a body, losing the trail, circling back to try again. Sheets flutter from his board like leaves from a tree too indifferent to notice its own autumn; they pass into the hands of admirers or vanish unsigned into corners. By the end, nearly four thousand will be produced.

He left almost no words. No diary, letters barely worth the postage, and, when Vienna finally pressed him for a self-account, hw ewplied with the slamming sound of a door closing:

Von mir gibt es kein Selbstporträt.

There is no self-portrait of me.

He is not interesting, the artist insists. He is a painter, more absorbed by the mystery of others than by the riddle of himself. Anyone intent on knowing him must do so by studying his pictures, as if reading a diary written in graphite and longing for truth.

Let us, then, accept the artist’s silence. Let us follow the prayer of that Viennese drawing monk by the blue habit.

A Cloister of One

In 1930, twelve years after Klimt’s death, Hermann Hesse published Narcissus and Goldmund, the story of two friends who divide the world between them. Narcissus is the perfect monk, a man of the word and the concept, at home in Greek and in logic, who knows himself completely.

Goldmund arrives at the cloister as a boy meant for the habit and cannot keep it: the world calls him out through the gates, and he spends his life on the roads, learning through everything Narcissus renounced: faces, bodies, women, hunger, the changing of light.

Narcissus lets him go with a sentence that has the calm cruelty of love:

Du bist Künstler, ich bin Denker. Du schläfst an der Brust der Mutter, ich wache in der Wüste.

You are an artist, I am a thinker. You sleep at the mother’s breast, I keep watch in the desert.

He continues:

Mir scheint die Sonne, dir scheinen Mond und Sterne

On me shines the sun, on you the moon and stars.

Two ways of being a self: one that can be said, and one that can only gather, wordlessly, in what his hands will make of the world. Goldmund becomes a carver of figures. He never manages a definition of himself; what he leaves behind are the faces of everyone he has loved, and that, the novel insists, is the only likeness his kind is granted.

Klimt, in a certain way, is Vienna’s Goldmund, down to the costume. The blue smock falls to his ankles like a habit; the studio runs on the rhythm of a cloister, the same office every day; and the appetite inside the discipline, the women inside the devotion, are Goldmund’s exact contradiction, a monastic life whose scripture is the body. Vienna kept demanding Narcissus of him: define yourself, explain the paintings, write something. His one page is Goldmund’s answer: I am not in the words. Look at what my looking made.

The Gold and the Graphite

The world, of course, keeps another Klimt: The Kiss appears in more bedrooms than any living painting, and the golden Adele is called Austria’s Mona Lisa.

Gold is easy to love, and even easier to confuse with the man himself. Gold is the language of the sun, applied last, covering all, designed to dazzle from afar.

The pencil, by contrast, speaks in the language of the moon. A sketch cannot deceive: it is the search itself, caught mid-pursuit, its missteps preserved in graphite.

For the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, more than a hundred preparatory drawings remain, and not a single fleck of gold appears among them: only a tired woman searching an armchair for a pose she can hold, restless hands, a line following her through every failed attempt. None of these sheets is a portrait of Adele; each is a portrait of Klimt’s effort to see her, missing, returning, trying again. The repetition, a hundredfold, is the truth the gold would later conceal.

On one scrap of brown packing paper, a draft for Water Serpents I, he even writes in the margin, three pencil words that are the sum of his collected writings. Kopf, Hals, länger. Head, neck, longer. The sound of a man measuring the gap between what he saw and what he managed to say.

Then 1945 delivered its verdict. In the war’s final days, the Faculty Paintings perished with the castle that sheltered them; that same year, a second fire found its way to Emilie Flöge’s apartment and claimed fifty of his sketchbooks, the private Klimt she had protected for decades.

The Last Sheet

Goldmund’s story ends at a bedside. Dying, he turns to Narcissus, the friend who knows everything and has touched nothing, and asks, in words that Hesse says burned in the thinker’s heart like fire: how will you manage to die, when you have no mother?

Ohne Mutter kann man nicht lieben. Ohne Mutter kann man nicht sterben.

Without a mother, one cannot love. Without a mother, one cannot die.

The artist dies cradled, he means, in the arms of what he loved. Klimt’s death fulfilled the novel that would be written twelve years later. When a stroke took him in January 1918, the phrase remembered from the sickroom was Emilie soll kommen, send for Emilie.

The entire vocabulary of a silent man was distilled, at the end, to a single name. She was the woman to whom he had mailed hundreds of postcards, about trains, weather, lunch, nothing at all. Devotion spoken in its plainest dialect. The man who gave Vienna one page had given her hundreds. She came; she stayed.

He had drawn the dead with tenderness since he was twenty; on the sixth of February, he joined them. And the drawing did not end with him.

Egon Schiele went to the morgue of the General Hospital and drew the dead face three times, the line searching, faltering, searching again. The self-portrait of Gustav Klimt exists at last, and Klimt is not its author. It was made in the only way a likeness can ever be made: by the loving attention of another.

No one draws their own portrait. It is drawn for us, inevitably, out of everything we pause to notice, sheet by sheet, in the margins of our days. One day, a hand that loved us completes it. Somewhere in your own margins, in pencil, yours has already begun.

Each August, the sky loosens its grip on light, scattering nights with the slow choreography of falling stars. People slip away from the city’s static, tilt their faces upward, and watch as stars trip and tumble through the night’s hush. While waiting for something to descend, they sketch with the mind’s pencil, tracing shapes and constellations. They search for the hunter, the bears, the queen enthroned.

Here is the quiet secret at the heart of it all: the shapes do not exist. The stars, flung across impossible distances, are strangers to one another. We are the ones who draw the lines, threading them together in the privacy of our own minds. A constellation is not something found in the sky, but something we inscribe upon it.

In January 1940, in a house on the Normandy coast, Joan Miró began drawing those lines for himself: twenty-three small paintings, the Constellations, spun out over twenty-one months as France unravelled. Critics call them an escape; Miró did too. But escape feels like the wrong shape for what unfolded on those sheets. He was not fleeing the world. He was mending the one fragment left within reach.

Twenty-Three Nights

At Varengeville-sur-Mer, in 1939, he said later, “began a new stage in my work which had its source in music and nature. It was about the time that the war broke out. I felt a deep desire to escape. I closed myself within myself purposely. The night, music, and the stars began to play a major role in suggesting my paintings.”

The escape had a format. Sheets of paper of virtually identical size, about 38 by 46 centimetres, worked in gouache and oil wash, each one taking a month or more, taken up day after day, a few tiny stars and washes at a time. And each one dated, precisely, like a diary: the first, Sunrise, on 21 January 1940; the second, ten days later, The Escape Ladder. The ladder had been in his pictures since the beginning, leaning against the farmhouse in The Farm. Now it had work to do; it had to elevate the painter towards the sky.

He painted the tenth sheet on 14 May 1940. The German offensive in the west had opened four days earlier, and Normandy had begun to learn the sound of aircraft.

The Blank Sheets

The family fled: Pilar gripping their daughter’s hand, Miró with a portfolio tucked under his arm. Inside were the ten completed Constellations, and the blank sheets he hoped would become the rest. Picture him, one among a tide of refugees, carrying his own unpainted nights to safety, as if the papers were the family’s third child. They threaded through Paris, joined the great exodus south, and crossed into Spain, to Palma de Mallorca, his wife’s city.

The series records the escape in its own way. The tenth sheet is dated 14 May 1940, in Normandy; the eleventh, 4 September, in Palma. The four months of silence between the two dates are the flight.

In Palma he lived like a monk in hiding. “After lunch each day I would go to the cathedral to listen to the organ rehearsal,” he remembered. “I would sit there in that empty Gothic interior daydreaming, conjuring up forms.” Bach and Mozart entered the sheets, and so did the reading of those months: Saint John of the Cross, Saint Teresa, Mallarmé, Rimbaud. “It was an ascetic existence,” he said. “Only work.” The ladder climbed back into the pictures almost at once: the twelfth sheet, painted that October, is called On the 13th, the Ladder Brushed the Firmament. He finished the series at the family farm at Mont-roig, in Catalonia; the last sheet, The Passage of the Divine Bird, dated 12 September 1941.

Another Man’s Stairs

Six centuries earlier, another man had looked at the sky in the same way, from the wrong side of it. In 1302 Florence condemned Dante to exile, then threatened to be burnt if he ever returned. So he never did.

He wrote the entire Commedia displaced, on other people’s bread, and he knew exactly what that costs:

Tu proverai sì come sa di sale lo pane altrui.

You will learn how salty another man’s bread tastes.

E come è duro calle lo scendere e ‘l salir per l’altrui scale.

And how hard a road it is, the going down and the climbing up of another man’s stairs.

Another man’s stairs. Miró, marooned on his island, in a country he had already once abandoned, climbed them each day. At night, on paper, he painted his own ladder.

Dante, too, understood what hell is made of. He names it at the threshold: an air sanza stelle, without stars. From within hell, the sky is invisible; the punishment, distilled into two words. Here the two exiles diverge, and in that divergence lies the modern world. Dante looked up and read: his sky was a text already written, every sphere in its appointed place. Miró looked up and wrote the very webs of line in the Constellations. No one handed him an order of heaven, so he drew one. A constellation for Miró was a decision.

That is what these sheets are: not images of the sky, but decisions about it: twenty-three choices, made slowly, in hiding, while the world’s supposed order was being unmade by artillery.

The Exit Word

Dante ended all three parts of his poem on the same word.

E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle.

And then we came out, to see the stars again.

The three endings in sequence are a single instruction taking shape. First the stars are something you recover the sight of; then something you climb toward; and at the last they are the thing that has been moving you all along. Seeing again, climbing, being moved: hell, purgatory, paradise.

The Constellations repeat the sequence: begun by a man recovering the night sky from a war, continued up a ladder that brushed the firmament, finished under a divine bird.

In July 1944, twenty-two of the sheets sailed from Lisbon on a neutral Portuguese ship, and in January 1945, with the war still on, they were shown in New York, where they were received as the first message from Europe’s studios since France fell. Twenty-two, not twenty-three. The Morning Star never made the crossing, because Miró had given it to Pilar. One constellation stayed quietly at home, held back by the force Dante says moves all the others.

The stars are the possession of the dispossessed. Exile can take the ground, the bread, the stairs, everything that is under you; what is above you cannot be taken away. So go out, some night soon, while August is still shedding its lights, and catch a falling star if you can. Then stay a moment for the ones that do not fall, and draw the lines. It is the oldest thing we do with what we cannot reach.

Nighthawks puts you on a street corner past midnight, in a city that has finished with the day. The shops opposite have shut their lights, the upstairs windows are asleep, the pavements are empty. What remains is a diner wrapped in a single curve of glass and, inside it, held in a light with no visible source, four people: a man and a woman whose hands lie close on the counter without touching, a second man alone with his back to us, and a man in white bent to some small task between two coffee urns. No one is speaking. The glass, if you follow it round, admits no door: no way in from the street, and no way out either.

The loneliest painting in America, people have called it for more than eighty years. Hopper himself, asked twenty years after he painted it, would concede only this much: “Unconsciously, probably, I was painting the loneliness of a large city.”

If you read the sentence slowly: two hedges in the first five words, from a man who chose words the way he chose light. He does not deny the loneliness, but he declines to give it the painting. I think he was right. The loneliness is real, but it is the ambience of the picture, the cold where the whole scene stands in. The subject is the provision made against it, a provision of light.

The Trick Ending

He had told us, fifteen years before he painted it, what kind of picture it would have to be. In March 1927, Scribner’s Magazine printed a short story by Ernest Hemingway called “The Killers”. Hopper had illustrated for the magazine through the long years when painting did not pay, and he sat down and wrote to the editor. It was refreshing, he said, “to come upon such an honest piece of work in an American magazine”; and of “the ingenious mechanism of the trick ending”, he wrote, there was no taint in this story.

Two hired men walk into a lunch-room and wait for a boxer who never arrives. Nothing is resolved, because nothing happens: a lunch counter, at night, a man behind it, and no ending. Fifteen years later Hopper kept the architecture, subtracted the killers, and painted what was left: the light.

The Man Behind the Counter

The light is the wrong color for comfort: greenish, flat, stretching across the pavement in a long trapezoid, the sole brightness on the street. It flatters no one; it is the light of a place that must be scrubbed before dawn. No one in that diner is consoled, and no one is fooled. They are held, quietly, as hostages of loneliness.

The three customers keep their places like people with nowhere better to be, which is not quite the same as nowhere to go. They have rooms… maybe the ones behind those black windows across the street, one flight up. Whatever the rooms withhold at this hour, the counter provides.

The day after Hopper finished the painting, his wife Jo wrote to his sister: “E. posed for the two men in a mirror and I for the girl.” So the diner holds one man twice, and his wife once. And it holds a fourth figure, whom almost no one mentions.

Look at him for a moment. He is bent, in white, below the line of the counter, the only body in the picture caught in motion. Hopper gave him the brightest clothes on the canvas, then built the room around him: the urns at his elbow, the light he stands in so squarely that he might be its source. At four in the morning he will still be there. The coffee will still be hot. Whoever comes in out of that dark will be received. He is the only person in the painting who is there for someone else, like an anonymous hero fighting the solitude of the city and expecting nothing in return.

A Clean, Well-Lighted Place

Hemingway had already written that man. In 1933, six years after Hopper’s letter, he published a story about a café at closing time. A deaf old man sits late over his brandy. He tried to hang himself the week before, and he survived because his niece cut him down. The young waiter wants him gone. He wants to be home in bed with his wife. But the older waiter takes his time, and when pressed gives the one reason that matters: someone may need the café. Walking home through his own insomnia, he recites the prayer with the heart taken out of it, “Our nada who art in nada”.

The nothing in that story is not the fertile emptiness I wrote about once, the hollow that lets the bell ring. That emptiness made room for something to arrive. In this one nothing arrives, and nothing grows. Everyone has met it. It is what waits in the room when sleep will not come and the walls give nothing back.

You do not cultivate this nothing. You can only build a lit room against it.

And the remedy Hemingway proposes is almost insultingly small: light, cleanliness, order, and someone willing to stay open. No cure for the nada; a counter, a clean glass, a bulb that works. That is the man in white.

The Light Left On

Hopper finished the painting on 21 January 1942, after about six weeks at the easel, which places the first marks in the first days of the previous December, and Pearl Harbour was bombed on the seventh. All that winter New York practised darkness, and Hopper painted a glass box of light burning on a street corner. He painted a picture of a light that stays on, begun in the first winter the lights were ordered off.

So the painting is not a portrait of four lonely people. It is a portrait of the hour at which someone decides to stay open. When our rooms turn against us, we do not ask to be saved; we ask for somewhere to sit while it passes.

You are standing in the middle of the road, where no one could actually stand, and the light does not quite reach you. But it is on, and someone is keeping it on. It is still open. That is all the provision anyone is making tonight, and it is enough to cross the street for.

The painting presents a swimming pool in the south of France, a day so still it seems to hold its breath, green hills folded behind like a promise.

Two figures inhabit this hush, destined never to meet. One is submerged, swimming toward the edge in white trunks, his body blurred by the water, rendered expressionless, faceless. The other stands at the rim in a pink jacket, dry, upright, rendered with the crispness of a photograph, gazing down at the swimmer with the idle absorption of a man skimming through a book.

Everyone holds their gaze at the pink jacket, because he is the one the eye can claim. Yet, I think that the painting belongs to the other, and that blurring effect of that chlorinated water might tell us something more.

Two Photographs on a Floor

David Hockney made it in 1972, conjured from an ending and a stroke of accident. Two photographs had tumbled together on his studio floor: one of a figure swimming underwater, the other of a boy gazing downward. In their accidental pairing, he glimpsed something he had not yet managed to say aloud.

He had tried once before, in the autumn of 1971, the very year Peter Schlesinger left him after five years together, but when the composition refused to yield, he destroyed the canvas. The following April, with a New York exhibition looming, he flew to a borrowed pool near Saint-Tropez. He photographed a friend swimming underwater, then returned to London and took a photo of Schlesinger in Kensington Gardens, pink jacket, eyes on the grass.

Out of these borrowed fragments, in a fortnight of eighteen-hour days, he assembled a scene that never existed: the swimmer was a stand-in, the garden pretended to be France, and the man at the pool’s edge was already gone.

The Only Eyes in the Picture

Notice what he did with the arrangement. To the one who left him, he gave everything the painting could bestow: dry land, upright stature, a profile cut clean as glass, and most of all, the only eyes in the picture

He kept himself out of the frame, though the frame is nothing but him. He named it Portrait of an Artist, and the title suggests where the artist has gone: not at the edge, where love stands, crisp and intact, but in the water, where the one who was loved is quietly dissolving.

The Mother Who Stayed in Focus

There is a page in Italian literature that explains this geometry of loss and love. In 1915, in the first year of the war, Luigi Pirandello lost his mother, and instead of writing an elegy he wrote a conversation, the second of his Colloqui coi personaggi, in which her shadow returns to him and he tells her what her death has actually changed. Not her presence: tu sei viva, viva com’eri, he tells her, alive exactly as you were, alive with the same reality I gave you for years from far away, and alive for as long as I live. Her image in him has survived her completely; his grief has left it untouched, vivid, in focus.

What has died is something else, and he finds it with terrible precision: io non sono più vivo, e non sarò vivo per te mai più. I am no longer alive, and I will never again be alive for you. She keeps existing in his eyes; he has stopped existing in hers. And then the sentence that opens like a trapdoor under every mourner: quelli che si credono vivi credono anche di piangere i loro morti e piangono invece una loro morte.

The Geometry of the Pool

This is the geometry of the pool. The man in the pink jacket stands clear and whole because that is what love does with its object: five years from the beginning and a year past the end, Hockney could still keep Schlesinger upright, dry, every hair in place, just as Pirandello held his mother. Nothing of the beloved is lost when the beloved leaves; the image lingers, pitiless in its clarity.

What dissolves is the other thing: the self that lived in the beloved’s keeping, the version of you that existed only in eyes that have now closed. That is the figure in the water: the artist as he survived in Schlesinger’s withdrawn gaze, a body losing its outline in the element that once bore it, a face that cannot be found because no one is searching for it anymore. When we mourn a love, it is not the person who remains that we mourn. We mourn ourselves, the one they carried, the one who drowned when they turned away.

With a Dead Man’s Eyes

Hockney died at his home in London on 11 June this year, at eighty-eight. Schlesinger is seventy-eight and lives in New York, so the man at the pool’s edge has outlasted the man who placed him there.

In the colloquio, before she fades, Pirandello’s mother leaves her son a single instruction: guarda le cose anche con gli occhi di quelli che non le vedono più, look at things also with the eyes of those who no longer see them, and the sorrow of it, she promises, will make them more sacred and more beautiful.

Step into the museum hall, in front of you hanging, or better, levitating midair, leaning on an absolutely white wall, a Concetto Spaziale Attese, by Fontana. A monochromatic canvas is inviting you to wait, meditate, and contemplate the dialectical elan and the leap to absurdity it has endeavoured. Here, the tyranny of two dimensions is stretched to its breaking point, the surface coolly immaculate until it is breached- slashed with a violence so poised it feels almost ceremonial. The cuts are inflicted not to damage, but to liberate painting onto the infinity of tridimensionality, a wound not to kill, but to resurrect what was already dead.

Now, transpose yourself to a concert hall, where a chamber orchestra sustains a solitary F for four unbroken minutes. The full array of music scores flattened to a single note, the protagonist of a musical monologue. Giacinto Scelsi squashed and razed the variety of musical notes to uncover infinity itself - an entire orchestra’s worth of possibility, all secreted within the confines of one persistent pitch. Here, repetition is not monotony but a portal, inviting you to peer into the teeming multiplicity that hides behind apparent sameness.

Our reflex is to search for what is missing. One canvas appears to have mislaid its composition of shades, hues and colours. The orchestra seems to have forgotten the variations in notes and the dynamic jumps on the varied parallel lines of the musical scores. But in both cases, the work is not withholding something from you. But it has concentrated itself into a single gesture. It is inviting you to discover how a whole melody, a whole composition, can dwell behind the wall of the particular. It is inviting you to transfigure repetition into singularity.

Somewhere in the distance, a black canvas broods, deprived of visible details, unspoken to the eyes of the distant observer. Here is a musician silent in front of a grand piano, contemplating notes yet to be pressed, unheard by the impatient listener.
